To check an NCLT or NCLAT case status online, open eCourtsIndia search, pick the bench by its court code (for example NCLTMB0 for Mumbai), then search the company name or paste the 16-character CNR. Every National Company Law Tribunal bench and the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal sit in the same free index as the Supreme Court, the High Courts and the district courts, and the free-text box reads inside the full text of uploaded orders, not just the case header. Where NCLT and NCLAT sit on eCourtsIndia

What NCLT and NCLAT are

The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) is the trial-level tribunal for company law and insolvency in India, and the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) hears appeals against its orders. NCLT was constituted under the Companies Act, 2013 and is the adjudicating authority for corporate insolvency under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016. It handles company petitions, mergers and amalgamations, oppression and mismanagement cases, and the full corporate insolvency resolution process. NCLAT sits above it and also hears appeals from the Competition Commission of India and the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India.

In plain terms, if a financial creditor takes a defaulting company into insolvency, the case starts at an NCLT bench. If either side is unhappy with the outcome, the appeal goes to NCLAT, and from there to the Supreme Court. Each of those steps has its own record, and each is searchable on eCourtsIndia.

The 15 NCLT benches, and how to open each one

NCLT runs 15 benches, from the two giants in New Delhi and Mumbai down to Guwahati. Some benches file under more than one filing-office prefix, so a few have extra court codes (New Delhi has six besides NCLTDL0). New Delhi and Mumbai together hold 1,26,568 matters, about half of the national NCLT caseload on the platform. That concentration is what you would expect, since many of the largest corporate insolvencies are filed in the country’s two biggest commercial centres. Kolkata and Chennai form the next tier, and Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Bengaluru follow. Of the matters on the 15 main bench codes, roughly seven in ten are disposed and the rest are pending.

If you have ever wondered why a bench code ends in a zero, the tribunal CNR specification explains it. NCLT CNRs are built from the official 16-digit e-filing number: the 7-digit filing-office prefix is swapped for a 7-character bench code such as NCLTDL0, and the diary number and year are kept as they are. The extra codes like NCLTDL4 are the same physical bench filing through a different office.

NCLAT on eCourtsIndia, and why it has so many codes

NCLAT sits in two places, the Principal Bench at New Delhi and the Chennai Bench, but its records are spread over about 40 court codes. That is because NCLAT numbers matters by filing office and origin, and eCourtsIndia keeps one code per filing prefix so the CNR can be turned back into the official filing number without loss. Codes starting NCLAD are the New Delhi series, NCLAC is the Chennai series and NCLAE is a parallel Chennai filing series.

The single biggest NCLAT code is NCLAD10, with more than 40,000 records. Most NCLAT matters are interlocutory applications filed inside an appeal, followed by insolvency appeals, listed as Company Appeal (AT) (Insolvency). Because NCLAT is the last stop before the Supreme Court for an insolvency matter, its orders are widely cited in Indian corporate law, and they are full-text searchable here. The easiest way in is not the code at all: search the company name and let the results show you which series it sits in.

How to check an NCLT or NCLAT case status

Open eCourtsIndia search, narrow to the bench with its court code, then search by company name or CNR. There are four reliable routes, depending on what you already have.

1. By company name. Type the company name into the free-text box and add the bench filter, for example at ecourtsindia.com/search?cc=NCLTMB0 for Mumbai. The index matches party names on both sides, so it works whether the company is the applicant, the corporate debtor or a respondent. 2. By CNR. Every NCLT and NCLAT matter on eCourtsIndia carries a 16-character CNR that starts with the bench code, so NCLTMB0 for Mumbai or NCLTDL0 for New Delhi, followed by the diary number and the year. 3. From the official filing number. If all you have is the 16-digit NCLT or NCLAT e-filing number from a notice or the tribunal website, open the NCLT CNR generator (or the NCLAT CNR generator), paste it in and copy the CNR it mints. 4. By bench, then filter. To browse rather than look up one matter, open the bench with its cc= link and narrow by case type, status and filing year in the sidebar. NCLT uses its own vocabulary of case-type codes, and a wrong code returns nothing, so it helps to know the main ones. The table covers the 15 main bench codes.

The pattern tells a real story. Interlocutory applications outnumber the petitions that start a case by roughly three to one, because a single corporate insolvency spawns applications for resolution plans, liquidation steps, avoidance transactions and more.
