1. India Court Hierarchy at a Glance

The Indian judicial system is organised in five tiers. At the apex sits the Supreme Court of India. Below it are the 25 High Courts with their 41 principal and circuit benches. Under each High Court sit the state district courts, which handle trials and first-instance civil and criminal matters. Parallel to this mainstream hierarchy are specialised tribunals like NCLT, NCLAT, CAT, DRT, CESTAT, ITAT, and consumer forums that handle specific subject matter.

Tier Court Count Primary Jurisdiction Appeals To
1 Supreme Court of India 1 All-India apex court None (final)
2 High Courts 25 HCs, 41 benches State-level appellate and writ Supreme Court
3 District Courts 1,000+ Civil, criminal, family trials High Court
3A NCLT 14 benches Companies Act, IBC NCLAT
3B NCLAT 31 benches NCLT appeals, CCI Supreme Court
4 Tribunals Varies Specialised subject matter HC or SC

Knowing where your case belongs in this hierarchy is the first step. A service dispute with the central government goes to CAT, not a district court. A company winding-up petition goes to NCLT, not the civil court. A constitutional writ goes to the High Court under Article 226, or the Supreme Court under Article 32.
